Top Tips For Buying Glasses Online Without Mistakes

When you're looking to buy a new pair of glasses, there are several crucial factors to consider. Updating your prescription, selecting your preferred frame style, examining various lens coatings – these are just a few aspects to keep in mind. However, amidst all these considerations, there's one vital element that's often overlooked: the fit!

If you've ever had glasses that constantly slide off your face or cause discomfort, you understand the significance of a well-fitted frame. Yet, the importance of fit extends beyond mere comfort. Ill-fitting glasses can lead to eye strain, headaches, and even hinder your vision.

So, what defines a well-fitted pair of glasses? In this article, we'll walk you through the process of discovering a frame that perfectly complements the contours of your face!

Understanding the Factors That Influence the Fit of Your Glasses

  • Frame Width

Ideally, the frame width of your glasses should align with the distance between your temples when viewed from the front. Essentially, the frame shouldn't extend excessively beyond the sides of your face.

If you're considering buying a frame from Seoul Optics, we recommend starting with a medium size as it generally suits a broad range of individuals.

  • The Secret Behind the Numbers on the Frame Temple

If you're currently wearing glasses, take them off and look at the numbers on the inside of the temple. Typically comprised of three digits, these numbers signify lens width, bridge width, and temple length in millimeters.

If your current provide a comfortable fit, choose a pair with similar numbers next time!

  • Pupillary Distance (PD)

Pupillary distance is the distance between your pupils in millimeters. It's important because your eyes should be centrally aligned within the lenses of your glasses. You can easily measure your PD at home.

If you're new to wearing glasses, here's a tip! This advice is also beneficial for individuals currently wearing glasses but experiencing discomfort.

Suppose your PD is 60mm. The combined measurement of the lens width and bridge width, also referred to as Frame PD (FPD), should fall within the range of 60-70mm. In other words, the FPD of your glasses should be equal to or less than 10mm more than your PD.

  • Face Shape

Your face shape affects the fit. Unless you're an identical twin, it's better to try frames that suit you rather than borrowing someone else's glasses. While fashion tips can be useful, consider them as suggestions! When it comes to style, your preference matters the most.

The Ideal Positioning of Glasses on Your Face

  • Your eyes should be as close to the center of the lens as possible

This guideline applies both horizontally and vertically. Your eyes should not be too far up or down, left or right.

  • The frame should sit below your eyebrows

Your frame shouldn't cover or perch above your eyebrows. Your eyebrows play a crucial role in expressing your reactions and emotions!

  • The frame should not touch your cheeks or lift when you smile

If the frame shifts or makes contact with your cheeks, it's not a good fit!

  • The bridge or nose pads should not cause discomfort

Balance is key with glasses. If you feel like your glasses are tilting to one side, that's not right!

For those with higher ears, we recommend a titanium frame that allows adjustment of the temple angle.

Take a side view of yourself. If your ears are higher than the line from the corner of your eye, consider adjusting the angle of your temples.

Opticians: The Professionals in Fitting the Perfect Glasses

In most cases, it's best to consult with an optician if you have issues with how your glasses fit. However, there are situations where this may not be possible, such as when buying glasses online!

Seoul Optics stands by opticians. Opticians are involved in every step of your purchase process (for example, they might reach out if you've selected an option that doesn't alight with your vision).

Our opticians offer complimentary basic fitting! However, if you believe you have unique features, like higher ears than others, feel free to inform us. By providing a front and side view photo, our opticians will offer you a personalized fitting at no cost.

The sign that you're wearing good glasses is when you forget you're wearing them! Whether you wear glasses all day or only in certain situations, they should never be a source of discomfort for you.
